About SLD
Scottish Language Dictionaries is the quintessential research organisation for the Scots Language. We are responsible for the major dictionaries of the Scots Language and undertake a wide range of educational outreach work with people of all ages and abilities. Please explore our site and contact us if we can be of any assistance. We can help with your language queries, whether they are for the Sunday crossword or for an academic publication, and this website provides a wealth of information on Scots, its history and usage.
You can help us to continue our work by becoming a member of SLD, contributing to our reading scheme, sponsoring words in our new edition of the Concise Scots Dictionary or donating to our book fund.
Although it only came into being in its present form in 2002, Scottish Language Dictionaries has a much longer history as it continues the work of several generations of Scottish lexicographers. Our staff includes editors from the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue and from the Scottish National Dictionary Association. The work of these two projects resulted in the creation of the 22 volume Dictionary of the Scots Language, which is now available, free, via the internet.
Scottish Language Dictionaries is a Limited Company and Registered Charity in Scotland (SC032910).
We receive our core funding from the Scottish Arts Council and are very grateful for their continued support. We would also like to thank the many organisations who have contributed project funding to Scottish Language Dictionaries.
