North America

park in central Philadelphia
Our North American Outreach programme is aimed at people in the US and Canada with Scottish ties, and those with personal or academic interest in Scotland's linguistic culture. We can assist with research projects and advise on exhibitions on Scotland's languages, as well as answering general queries. We are keen to make contact with Scottish-North American organisations; in the last few years, as funds have allowed, we have collaborated with Highland Games, Scottish Festivals and Caledonian Societies and hope to build on those connections in the near future.

Dr Gwen Enstam is Manager of the Scottish Writing Exhibition, a joint project between Scottish Language Dictionaries and the Association for Scottish Literary Studies. The Scottish Writing Exhibition has taken place since 2004 at the annual Modern Language Association convention in North America, where our aim is to encourage and support the teaching of Scottish literature at the university level and provide resources throughout the year for academic research. The associated Scottish Studies ezine, The Bottle Imp, is published twice yearly.

We publish an electronic International Newsletter twice yearly: once in October and once in April. The newsletter is posted on this website, but if you'd like to be notified when each issue is available, please contact us with your email.

Dr Enstam is SLD's North American outreach officer. If you'd like more information on the work that we do in the US and Canada, or would like to discuss collaboration between SLD and your organisation, please don't hesitate to contact her.
